Then the scope widens to include light, topography, climate, the direc-
tion of the views, the hour the marine layer lifts. “Every place possesses 
an inherent character,” the partners note, “and we believe the archi-
tecture should emerge from an understanding of those conditions.”
What follows is a conversation between the two. The house becomes 
the mediator between inhabitant and environment, framing views, 
shaping light, offering enclosure in one room and open air in the 
next. The stated ambition is for the line between indoors and out to 
disappear entirely.
Material selection here proceeds from contrast. Stone against wood. 
Concrete against textile. Metal that will weather, set beside a surface 
that will not.
