“We are often drawn to pairing materials with a 
sense of permanence and longevity, such as stone, 
with those that feel warmer and more transient, 
like wood,” the partners explain. “A beautifully 
wrought stone surface set against a warm wood 
wall creates a dialogue between the enduring and 
the organic.”
The same logic governs proportion. The firm looks 
for balance between heaviness and lightness, 
refinement and rawness, enclosure and openness, 
and describes what those contrasts produce as a 
quiet tension. 
A recurring risk in architecture at this level is the 
house that photographs better than it lives. Laidlaw 
Schultz names it directly.
“A home should have a strong point of view, but 
it should never feel precious or imposed on the 
people who live there,” the partners say. The aim 
is architecture that is emotionally resonant and 
formally disciplined while remaining warm and 
intuitive to move through.
