Laidlaw Schultz Architects has worked from 
the same block in Corona del Mar for long 
enough to have watched the coastline become 
the address it is now. Scott Laidlaw and Craig 
Schultz founded the practice in 1992, and the 
work since has moved at a range unusual for a 
firm of its size: campus projects at Berkeley and 
UCLA, studio lots for Paramount and Warner 
Bros., the Port Theater, and a long line of private 
residences from Emerald Bay to Sun Valley.
“At its core, our work is an exploration of the 
poetic relationship between people, place, 
and material,” the partners say. “Rather than 
imposing a predetermined aesthetic, we seek 
to uncover an architectural response that feels 
authentic to its setting and its owners.”
Before form, before material, there is a long 
period of listening. The firm spends its early 
weeks with clients learning how they actually 
live: where they gather, where they go to be 
alone, how a Sunday morning in the house 
differs from a Friday evening. The questions 
have less to do with square footage than with 
ritual, and the answers tend to be the ones a 
client has never been asked to put into words.
