The Collectors
Collected by John D. Rockefeller III and Blanchette Hooker
Rockefeller between the 1950s and 1970s, the exhibition
reflects a belief that art possesses the rare ability to bridge
cultures. Their collection, later gifted to Asia Society, con-
tinues to foster dialogue across continents, an enduring
testament to curiosity, diplomacy, and the idea that beauty
can transcend borders.
Two Millennia, One Conversation
Rare Chinese ceramics, Korean vessels, Japanese metalwork,
and south and southeast Asian sculpture come together in
a dialogue that stretches across geography and time. While
created centuries apart, the works share a common lan-
guage of craftsmanship, exchange, and human connection:
timeless values that feel especially resonant during a season
devoted to reunion and reflection.
History, Continued
A companion display gathers recent gifts from the
Rockefellers’ daughters, Hope Aldrich and Sandra Ferry
Rockefeller: eight new acquisitions shown beside five com-
parative works. Among them, Shiva as Vinadhara, a Chola-
period copper alloy figure caught mid-performance, given
by Hope Aldrich in 2024. Seventy years on, the family is
still adding to the room their parents started. 
Blanchette
Hooker Rockefeller
